Westwind and Trinity College Dublin form alliance to accelerate Nano and Micromachining technology
POOLE, UK, 11th June 2008 – Westwind have provided a high speed, 200,000 rpm spindle for investigative use by Trinity’s department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.
Westwind’s experience in the volume manufacture of high speed, high precision products makes them a well suited partner for Trinity, whose research groups are world renowned for their contribution to industry and progressive approach. Both parties are hoping to benefit from the collaboration by sharing knowledge and resources to explore the manufacturing possibilities for micro components.
Westwind's success with high speed products is rooted in the printed circuit board industry. Consumer demand for smaller and more compact electronic devices and the consequent requirement for circuit boards with smaller holes have driven the continual development of higher speed drilling spindles.
Westwind currently supply the industry with 160,000 and 180,000 rpm spindles which have become the production standard; in 2007 volume reached in excess of 500 pieces per week. The 200,000 RPM spindle is set to redefine the industry in late 2008, early 2009. For niche Printed Circuit Board applications Westwind supplies a 300,000 rpm product.
